Como funcionam os algarismos romanos

Roman numerals use seven symbols to represent all integers from 1 to 3999. Numbers are formed by combining symbols from largest to smallest, left to right. When a smaller symbol appears immediately before a larger one, it is subtracted — a rule called subtractive notation. In all other positions, symbols are added.

The six valid subtractive pairs are: IV (4), IX (9), XL (40), XC (90), CD (400), CM (900). Combinations like IC, VX, or IM are not valid.
