What Is Daylight Saving Time?

Daylight Saving Time (DST) is the practice of advancing clocks by one hour during the warmer months of the year so that daylight extends further into the evening hours. When clocks "spring forward" in spring, you lose an hour of sleep but gain an extra hour of evening light. When clocks "fall back" in autumn, you regain that hour of sleep but evening darkness arrives earlier.

The idea was first seriously proposed by New Zealand entomologist George Vernon Hudson in 1895, who wanted more daylight after work to collect insects. Benjamin Franklin had written a satirical essay touching on the concept in 1784, but never advocated for it seriously. Germany and Austria-Hungary were the first countries to actually implement DST, doing so in April 1916 during World War I as an energy conservation measure. Britain followed weeks later, and the practice spread across Europe.

The purported benefits — reduced energy consumption, lower traffic accident rates, more economic activity during daylight hours — have been debated for over a century. Modern research suggests the energy savings are minimal (and may even be negative when air conditioning demand is factored in), while the disruption to sleep cycles causes measurable spikes in heart attacks, workplace injuries, and road accidents in the days following each clock change.

United States DST Dates 2026

The United States follows a schedule set by the Energy Policy Act of 2005:

  • Spring forward: Sunday, March 8, 2026 at 2:00 AM local time → clocks move to 3:00 AM
  • Fall back: Sunday, November 1, 2026 at 2:00 AM local time → clocks move to 1:00 AM

DST is observed in 48 of 50 states. Arizona (except the Navajo Nation) and Hawaii do not observe DST and remain on standard time year-round. US territories including Puerto Rico, Guam, the US Virgin Islands, American Samoa, and the Northern Mariana Islands also do not observe DST.

During DST, most of the US moves to these offsets: Eastern Time becomes EDT (UTC-4), Central Time becomes CDT (UTC-5), Mountain Time becomes MDT (UTC-6), and Pacific Time becomes PDT (UTC-7).

Note: The US Senate unanimously passed the Sunshine Protection Act in 2022 to make DST permanent, but the bill never passed the House and expired. As of 2026, no change to the current system has been enacted.

European Union DST Dates 2026

The EU harmonized its DST schedule in 1996. All EU member states change clocks on the same days:

  • Spring forward: Sunday, March 29, 2026 at 2:00 AM local time → clocks move to 3:00 AM
  • Fall back: Sunday, October 25, 2026 at 1:00 AM UTC → clocks move back to 1:00 AM local time

This covers all 27 EU member states including Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Poland, and the Scandinavian countries (Sweden, Finland, Denmark — though Denmark includes Greenland which has different rules). Central European Time (CET, UTC+1) shifts to Central European Summer Time (CEST, UTC+2) during DST. Western European Time (WET, UTC+0) in Portugal shifts to WEST (UTC+1).

The EU Parliament voted in 2019 to abolish seasonal clock changes by 2021, allowing each member state to choose its permanent time. However, the proposal stalled in the Council and has not been implemented. The EU continues to observe DST on the schedule above.

United Kingdom DST Dates 2026

Although the UK left the EU, it maintains the same DST schedule as the EU for the last Sunday in March and October:

  • Spring forward (BST begins): Sunday, March 29, 2026 at 1:00 AM GMT → clocks move to 2:00 AM BST (UTC+1)
  • Fall back (GMT resumes): Sunday, October 25, 2026 at 2:00 AM BST → clocks move back to 1:00 AM GMT (UTC+0)

BST stands for British Summer Time. During BST, London is at UTC+1. During winter, it returns to GMT (UTC+0). Note that Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland follow the same schedule as England.

Australia and New Zealand DST Dates 2026

Australia is in the Southern Hemisphere, so its seasons are reversed. DST runs through the Australian summer (October to April):

  • Spring forward: Sunday, October 4, 2026 at 2:00 AM → clocks move to 3:00 AM
  • Fall back: Sunday, April 5, 2026 at 3:00 AM → clocks move to 2:00 AM

However, DST is not observed uniformly across Australia:

  • Observes DST: New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania, Australian Capital Territory
  • Does NOT observe DST: Queensland, Western Australia, Northern Territory

This means during Australian summer, the time difference between Sydney (AEDT, UTC+11) and Brisbane (AEST, UTC+10) is one hour, even though they are in the same geographic region.

New Zealand observes DST from the last Sunday in September to the first Sunday in April:

  • Spring forward: Sunday, September 27, 2026 at 2:00 AM NZST → clocks move to 3:00 AM NZDT (UTC+13)
  • Fall back: Sunday, April 5, 2026 at 3:00 AM NZDT → clocks move to 2:00 AM NZST (UTC+12)

Other Countries That Observe DST in 2026

Beyond the major regions above, the following countries also observe DST in 2026:

  • Canada: Same dates as the US (March 8 and November 1), except Saskatchewan which does not change clocks
  • Mexico: Spring forward first Sunday in April (April 5, 2026); fall back last Sunday in October (October 25, 2026). Note: most of Mexico stopped observing DST in October 2022, but northern border states near the US still follow the US schedule.
  • Chile: Spring forward first Saturday in September; fall back first Saturday in April (Southern Hemisphere)
  • Paraguay: Spring forward first Sunday in September; fall back last Sunday in March
  • Cuba: Spring forward second Sunday in March; fall back last Sunday in October
  • Iran: Observes its own DST schedule: spring forward late March, fall back late September
  • Israel: Spring forward last Friday before April 2; fall back last Sunday in October
  • Jordan: Spring forward last Friday in February; fall back last Friday in October
  • Lebanon: Spring forward last Sunday in March; fall back last Sunday in October
  • Morocco: Has complex DST rules that pause during Ramadan

Countries That Do NOT Observe DST

The majority of the world's nations do not observe DST and remain on standard time year-round. These include:

  • Asia: Japan, China, India, most of Southeast Asia (Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines), South Korea, Singapore
  • Africa: Almost the entire continent (with the exception of Morocco and sometimes Egypt)
  • South America: Brazil abolished DST in 2019; Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, Venezuela do not observe it
  • Middle East: Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman do not observe DST
  • Pacific: Most Pacific island nations

Notably, Russia abandoned DST in 2014 after years of health complaints from the population. The country moved to permanent standard time under a decree by President Putin. Turkey similarly abandoned clock changes in 2016, moving to permanent summer time (UTC+3 year-round).

The Ongoing DST Abolition Debate

The movement to abolish DST has gained significant momentum in the 21st century. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine, the American Heart Association, and numerous other medical bodies have called for the US to adopt permanent standard time, citing research showing that standard time is better aligned with human circadian rhythms.

Proponents of permanent summer time (keeping clocks forward year-round) argue that lighter evenings benefit the economy, reduce seasonal depression, and lower crime rates. Proponents of permanent standard time argue that morning darkness in winter under permanent summer time would be dangerous for children walking to school and workers commuting before dawn at northern latitudes.

As of 2026, no major country has successfully transitioned to a permanent clock despite widespread legislative efforts.

Tips for Travelers During DST Transitions

  • Book flights carefully around changeover weekends — a flight at "1:30 AM" on a fall-back night effectively operates in a time loop.
  • Set your phone to update automatically — modern smartphones handle DST transitions, but older devices or custom alarm apps may not.
  • Know which US states don't change — if you're scheduling a call with someone in Arizona in July, they are on the same time as Colorado in winter but the same as California in summer.
  • Check before scheduling international meetings — because the EU and US change on different dates (late March vs. early March), there is a two-to-three-week window each spring when transatlantic time differences are one hour different from their usual values.

Frequently Asked Questions

When does DST start in the US in 2026?

Daylight saving time in the United States begins on Sunday, March 8, 2026, at 2:00 AM local time, when clocks spring forward to 3:00 AM. It ends on Sunday, November 1, 2026, at 2:00 AM when clocks fall back to 1:00 AM.

When does DST start in the UK in 2026?

In the UK, British Summer Time (BST) begins on Sunday, March 29, 2026, at 1:00 AM GMT when clocks move forward to 2:00 AM BST. BST ends on Sunday, October 25, 2026, at 2:00 AM BST when clocks move back to 1:00 AM GMT.

Why do the US and Europe change clocks on different dates?

The US follows the Energy Policy Act of 2005 (second Sunday of March, first Sunday of November), while the EU follows Directive 2000/84/EC (last Sunday of March, last Sunday of October). This creates a 2-3 week window each spring and a one-week window each autumn when transatlantic time differences shift by one hour.

Which countries do not observe daylight saving time?

The majority of countries do not observe DST, including China, Japan, India, most of Southeast Asia, almost all of Africa, Brazil, Argentina, Russia, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE. Only about 70 of the world's roughly 195 countries currently change their clocks.

Is the EU going to abolish daylight saving time?

The EU Parliament voted in 2019 to abolish seasonal clock changes, allowing each member state to choose permanent summer or winter time. However, the proposal stalled in the Council of the European Union and has not been implemented. As of 2026, EU countries continue to observe DST.

What is the Sunshine Protection Act?

The Sunshine Protection Act was a US bill passed unanimously by the Senate in 2022 that would have made daylight saving time permanent year-round. The bill never passed the House of Representatives and expired at the end of the congressional session. No similar legislation has been enacted as of 2026.

How does DST work in the Southern Hemisphere?

In the Southern Hemisphere, seasons are reversed, so DST runs from around October to April (their summer). Countries like Australia and New Zealand spring forward in September/October and fall back in March/April, which is the opposite schedule from Northern Hemisphere countries.
