About the Business Days Calculator
Business days (also called working days or trading days) are weekdays — Monday through Friday — excluding weekends. They are the standard unit of time for commerce, law, and government because they reflect when people and institutions are typically available to transact business.
While a calendar week has 7 days, a business week has only 5 — meaning a 30-calendar-day month contains roughly 22 business days, and a full year contains approximately 260 working days before accounting for public holidays.
Where Business Days Are Used
Legal & regulatory deadlines
Court filing windows, regulatory response periods, and contract notice requirements are commonly expressed in business days. A ''5 business day'' response period after a Friday deadline ends the following Friday, not the following Wednesday.
Banking & finance
Wire transfers settle in T+1 or T+2 business days. Stock trades settle in T+2. Cheques clear in 2–5 business days. Interest on overnight rates is quoted per business day.
Shipping & logistics
Carriers quote delivery times in business days, excluding weekends and observed holidays. A 3-business-day shipment placed Thursday typically arrives Tuesday, not Sunday.
Employment & payroll
Notice periods, payroll cycles, and statutory deadlines — such as the 3-day right-to-rescind period on some contracts — are counted in business days, not calendar days.
