About Memorial Day
Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States observed on the last Monday of May, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the US military. It originated after the Civil War as 'Decoration Day,' when Americans decorated the graves of fallen soldiers.
The holiday grew from local observances in the late 1860s. By 1890, it was recognized by all Northern states. After World War I, it expanded to honor all Americans who died in any war. The Uniform Monday Holiday Act of 1968 moved it to the last Monday of May.
Memorial Day is often confused with Veterans Day (November 11), which honors all who have served. Memorial Day specifically remembers those who gave their lives in military service.
