About Whit Monday
Whit Monday, also known as Pentecost Monday, is a Christian holiday observed the day after Pentecost Sunday — the seventh Sunday after Easter. It is a public holiday in many European countries including Germany, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Austria.
Pentecost commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and other followers of Jesus Christ, as described in the Acts of the Apostles. It is considered the birthday of the Christian church.
Historically, Pentecost was one of the major occasions for Christian baptism, and candidates would wear white garments — hence the name 'Whitsunday' (White Sunday) and 'Whit Monday.'
